February is a short month - maybe a wee bit too short for Lenovo's taste. The PC manufacturer had announced the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 9 and ThinkPad X1 Yoga Gen 6 at the virtual CES 2021 to be available in February. That did not happen: The two high end business class laptops did not arrive in February. Lenovo narrowly missed the goal, as they have dropped them now, in early March.
The price for being an early adopter in this case is very high: Both the X1 Carbon 2021 and X1 Yoga 2021 are only available as three pre-configured models at lenovo.com at the moment. Both of them lack any discounts and prices are extremely high: The cheapest X1 Carbon Gen 9 costs $2,819 - for that much money, buyers get a Tiger Lake i5, 16 GB RAM, a 512 GB SSD and a WUXGA/FHD+ (1,920 x 1,200) screen. The least expensive ThinkPad X1 Yoga Gen 6 is even more expensive with $3,189. The configuration is almost identical, but the convertible does include a high-res 4K-UHD+ (3,840 x 2,400).
It seems strange that Lenovo would release their X1 ThinkPads with such an high price, but it is a common sight: The thinner 3:2 convertible ThinkPad X1 Titanium Yoga started out equally expensive. A few weeks later, the prices have dropped considerably on that one: The least-expensive X1 Titanium currently costs more than $1,000 less than right after release. Once Lenovo's usual discounts set in, the new ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 9 and the X1 Yoga Gen 6 should be much more affordable.
