The Yoga 9i is Lenovo’s new flagship convertible laptop - The Verge

lenovo.indah.link

Lenovo has announced a new flagship consumer laptop line, the Yoga 9 series. The line includes the convertible Yoga 9i, which comes in both 14- and 15-inch sizes, as well as a 14-inch, non-convertible Yoga Slim 9i (which will be called the IdeaPad Slim 9i in North America). The Yoga 9i replaces last year’s Yoga C940, which many reviewers praised as one of the best convertible laptops on the market.

The Slim is one of Lenovo’s thinnest and lightest laptops, according to the company; it’s 0.54 inches thick and weighs 2.77 pounds (1.26kg). The 14-inch Yoga is also fairly compact at 3.02 pounds (1.37kg). But their all-aluminum chassis are designed for durability, Lenovo says, and can handle up to 3kg (over six pounds) of pulling force.

They’re also meant to look (and feel) classy. The Slim 9i’s lid is covered in leather, a feature that’s optional on the 14-inch Yoga as well. They’ll be the first leather-covered Lenovo consumer laptops.

All of the leather-covered models include an edge-to-edge glass palm rest, with a touchpad encased beneath — it provides haptic feedback to reproduce the feeling of a click. There’s a fingerprint-resistant coating, Lenovo says, to prevent smudges.

Inside, the 14-inch Yoga 9i and the IdeaPad Slim 9i both have Intel’s upcoming Tiger Lake processors and new Thunderbolt 4 connection standard, which Lenovo says will enable “super-fast” transfer speeds.

The 15-inch Yoga 9i is a bit bulkier at 4.4 pounds (2kg). It includes 10th-Gen processors up to the Core i9 HK Series, two Thunderbolt 3 ports, and a GPU up to Nvidia’s GTX 1650 Ti with Max-Q design.

Like the C940, the two Yoga 9i models also have a rotating speaker built into their hinge. That feature gave their predecessor significantly better audio than many other laptops in its class. Both also come with a garaged stylus, which charges inside the PC when you’re not using it.

The 15-inch Yoga 9i comes with 16GB of DDR4 memory and up to 2TB of storage.

Meanwhile, the Slim has a couple cool features of its own. Its keyboard, called the Smart Sense Keyboard, automatically adjusts its backlighting based on ambient light conditions. And you can hit a physical switch on the side of the device to cut power to the webcam.

The Yoga models will be available in October; the 14-inch model starts at $1,399 for the metal version and $1,699 for the leather version, while the 15-inch laptop starts at $1,799. The Slim is coming in November and starts at $1,599.

Lenovo unveils new Google Assistant-powered smart clock - The Verge

lenovo.indah.link

Lenovo announced a new Google Assistant-powered alarm clock, the Smart Clock Essential. It’s an update to the Lenovo Smart Clock, which the company released last year.

Several companies, including Lenovo itself, have developed touchscreen smart displays that incorporate video chatting, streaming, internet browsing, smart-home controls, and any other functions you can think of into one device. What set the Lenovo Smart Clock apart, though, was that it didn’t try to do everything — it was just very good at being an alarm clock. It offered a wide range of unique clock faces and ringtones, it suggested alarms based on your schedule, you could smack the top to snooze, and the display gradually got brighter 30 minutes before your wakeup time to ease you into the day. That’s it; it was just a fine clock.

The Smart Clock Essential looks to be following that same vein — it’s clearly a clock with Google Assistant, rather than a smart speaker or a smart display. But Lenovo intends for the Essential to function as more of a multipurpose clock, and has moved the focus away from the bedroom features.

“Building on the Lenovo Smart Clock for the bedroom, the Lenovo Smart Clock Essential extends the same hands-free, time-saving convenience to the rest of the home, offering full voice support with Google Assistant,” said Lenovo in a press release.

The screen is more traditional than its predecessor’s. It looks like an old-fashioned LED display, but there is some extra information: You’ll see the time, the day, the weather, and the temperature. It seems to lack the fancier touchscreen features that you’ll find on the Smart Clock.

There’s also a nightlight built into the back, which could be handy if you’re walking around your house at night, as well as a USB port for charging devices, and a 3W 1.5-inch speaker for playing tunes. The Smart Clock had the same size speaker, and it delivered surprisingly strong audio for such a small device. (If you have other Google Assistant and Chromecast speakers, you should be able to group them with the Clock Essential as well.)

And, of course, you can use the Clock Essential to do everything Google Assistant can do, including streaming playlists and podcasts, adding items to your shopping lists, making calls, and controlling compatible smart devices.

Design-wise, the Smart Clock Essential looks fairly similar to the Smart Clock, with a four-inch screen and a soft grey finish. Both devices have buttons on the top which you can use to set timers and control the speaker volume if you don’t feel like yelling at Google.

The Smart Clock Essential starts at $49.99 and should hit shelves sometime in September. That’s a drop from the Smart Clock, which starts at $79.99.

The new device won’t be the only voice-assistant clock on the market, but it will certainly be one of the more affordable ones. Lenovo’s lineup of larger smart displays is significantly more expensive, including a 7-incher for $99, an 8-incher for $149, and a 10-incher for $199.

Google’s Nest Hub, which has a seven-inch screen and functions as an entertainment hub loaded with YouTube and streaming services, is $89. Amazon’s Echo Show 5 is smaller and shaped more like the Smart Clock, but also costs $89. Even Amazon’s 2.5-inch touchscreen Echo Spot, which is the closest thing to a straight-up clock in the Echo lineup, is $129, though it’s frequently discounted. Budget shoppers could look at something like the $49 Google Nest Mini or $59 Echo Dot, but you won’t get a screen to display the time and other useful stats. In short: This could be a good device for its price, though we’ll have to see how well it works to know for sure.

Lenovo’s Tab P11 Pro is a $499 tablet with an OLED screen - The Verge

lenovo.indah.link

Lenovo has launched the new Tab P11 Pro, a midrange Android 10 tablet with an 11.5-inch OLED display that seems like a fantastic option if you watch a lot of movies. It starts at $499 and will be available during the holiday season.

The Tab P11 Pro is powered by the Snapdragon 730G processor, the same one that’s found in the Google Pixel 4A. So while it’s not nearly as powerful as the Snapdragon 865 Plus used in Samsung’s new Tab S7 and S7 Plus, it should run relatively smoothly if you avoid intensive games and applications.

Lenovo Tab P11 Pro
The selfie cam is located in a more convenient location if you’re using this tablet with the keyboard.
Image: Lenovo

But for what it lacks in speed, it seems to make up for with a better screen than any other tablet that comes to mind in this price range. It has a 16:10 aspect ratio OLED screen (2,560 x 1,600) with a peak brightness of 500 nits. In terms of security, it has a fingerprint sensor built into the display.

Lenovo implemented a four-speaker JBL system with Dolby Atmos support and a huge 8,600mAh battery. Whether you’re on a long flight or train ride, you won’t have to hunt for a power outlet while you’re binging movies and TV shows. Each configuration comes with 128GB of storage, but its microSD slot will let you expand that.

The Tab P11 Pro looks strikingly similar to the iPad Pro and Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 and S7 Plus. One design choice I’m particularly fond of is that the Tab P11 Pro’s camera is located on the long side of the tablet. So, if you’re using it in landscape mode to type, the camera will be just above the display like it is on most laptops. Lenovo says that its camera is capable of blurring out the background, too, so in this age of endless video meetings, that seems great to have.

Lenovo made a pen, keyboard, and kickstand pack, and if you want that bundled in, it will cost $599.99. That’s a good price considering how much the likes of Apple, Samsung, and Microsoft charge for extra accessories. If you get them, something worth knowing is that Lenovo says the tablet’s software will automatically adapt to a desktop-like experience when the keyboard latches to its side-mounted pogo pins a la Apple’s Smart Connector.

Lenovo Tab P11 Pro
Lenovo claims the selfie camera can automatically blur your background.
Image: Lenovo

The new Tab P11 Pro’s main competition is the Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 I mentioned above, and it’s easy to see where Lenovo’s doesn’t match it when just comparing specs. It doesn’t support 5G (though in certain regions outside of the US, you’ll be able to buy an LTE-ready version of the Tab P11 Pro), nor does its screen have a fast 120Hz refresh rate.

Samsung’s tablets likely run rings around the Tab P11 Pro with its Snapdragon 865 Plus processor and 8GB of RAM. But if all you want is an Android tablet with a beautiful OLED display, $499 is certainly a more appealing price than Samsung’s smaller $649 tablet that has an LCD screen.

The best Labor Day sales for 2020: Ring security, vacuums, Lenovo laptops and more - CNET

Show more (8 items)

Perhaps it's appropriate that Labor Day, which celebrates the contributions and achievements of the American labor union and the workers who make our nation tick, has evolved in modern times into a sales event where regular people can save a bunch of money. And despite the weirdness of living through a pandemic, this year is no exception.

With Labor Day taking place on Monday, Sept. 7, we're still in the early days of the sale, which for many retailers won't kick off until next week. I've rounded up the best deals we currently know about -- and which we're allowed to tell you about -- but check back often as we creep closer to the holiday because we'll be adding new deals all the time.

And while you're looking around for Labor Day deals, here are a few others definitely worth checking out:

Labor Day 2020 deals available right now

Sarah Tew/CNET

When: Right now

Lenovo has launched its Labor Day doorbuster sale, and there are savings on dozens of laptops. Check out the deal on the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon, usually priced at $2,149 but selling right now for $900 when you use promo code THINKDEAL at checkout.

The X1 Carbon is a best-in-class ultraportable that combines premium design appeal with business-grade privacy and security features. Read CNET's review of the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 7.

There are a lot more deals -- see all the Lenovo laptops on sale on the site's Labor Sale sale page. Here are a few others to look out for:

Amazon

When: Right now

The Doorbell 3 is the latest version of the Ring and has only been available since the start of summer. Under the hood it features dual 2.4 and 5GHz Wi-Fi for better streaming video. Amazon is selling it for $50 off, but also throws in the $90 Amazon Echo Show 5 for free.

Polk

When: Right now (though Sept. 7)

Polk has reduced the price of its S2 ultraslim soundbar for Labor Day, now $50 off its list price. It's been cheaper -- the S2 was as low as $160 in the spring, but this is still a good deal. It connects to your TV with HDMI ARC so you can control everything with a single remote control. It features five full-range drivers and a wireless subwoofer, supports Bluetooth and specifically targets center-channel audio to make sure dialogue is clear and understandable.

Courant

When: Right now (through Sept. 7)

Wireless chargers are a dime a dozen (not literally, of course) but Courant makes chargers that elevate your desktop (again, not literally). Wrapped in a pebble-grain Italian leather and available in an assortment of colors, these are snazzy. Right now, everything on the site is 25% off, with the discount applied automatically at checkout, and monogramming is included for free.

Browse the whole collection, or sample what Courant has to offer with these selections:

Tribit

When: Right now (through Sept. 7)

The Tribit QuietPlus 72 headphones are usually priced $70, but they're on sale for $45 during Labor Day when you apply the coupon on the product page and add promo code LBDQPLUS at checkout. These compact over-the-ear headphones charge via USB-C and deliver about 30 hours of runtime between charges. More importantly, these are noise-canceling headphones that Tribit says can block up to 32dB of ambient sound.

Ring

When: Right now

Ring is running a sale on four of its second-generation alarm kits for Labor Day. They're all 20% off, so you'll save anywhere from $40 to $70, depending upon which one you choose. Here are your options:

Eargo

When: Right now (through Sept. 8)

The Eargo Neo HiFi invisible in-ear hearing aids are available for $2,700 when you apply promo code LABORDAY20 at checkout. That's $250 off the list price.

That's $2,700 for the pair of hearing aids and all the accessories. If you're thinking in earbud terms that might sound like a lot of money, but hearing aid wearers are used to substantially higher prices. In fact, it's not unusual to pay about this much for each individual earbud rather than the complete set. But despite the far more affordable price, the Neo HiFi aids are designed to deliver really high sound quality, with features such as wind noise reduction and feedback cancellation. They're also fully invisible in-ear buds, and rely on a "flexi palm design," which are little treelike spikes that position the buds in your ear.

BlazePod

When: Aug. 31-Sept. 7

BlazePods is an at-home, pro-level training system. Using interactive, touch-sensitive pods, you can choose from among an enormous library of workouts and games to work on balance, coordination, core, flexibility, power, spatial awareness, speed, stamina and more. With kids schooling from home and adults working from home -- and gyms still closed in most locations -- this is a great solution for exercising in place.

During this Labor Day sale, all kits are 20% off site-wide. Exception: Bundles aren't included in the sale.

Labor Day 2020 deals coming soon

These deals aren't live yet -- they're starting in just a few days. Be sure to note the date for each deal below.

Roborock

When: Sept. 1-7

Roborock's newest cordless stick vacuum is the H6, and it's $50 off for Labor Day week. This new vacuum generates a respectable 25,000 Pa of suction and can run for a maximum of about 90 minutes in eco-mode (or 10 minutes running full-bore in max mode). It features HEPA air filtration and weighs in at just 3 pounds.

Roborock

When: Sept. 1-7

Regularly priced at $270, the E4 is one of Roborock's most popular models, particularly among pet owners thanks to its robust 2,000 Pa of suction in carpet boost mode. The vacuum's large battery can run for about 200 minutes on a charge (over 2,000 square feet) and Roborock cites an oversized dustbin so you don't need to empty it as often.

The Roborock E4 is about $50 off during the sale, selling for $219 when you apply promo code ROBOROCKE45 at checkout.

Roborock

When: Sept. 4-7

Roborock's newest robot is a combination vacuum and mop, and it's $45 off for the holiday when you apply promo code ROBOS6MAXV at checkout.

The S6 MaxV includes a pair of cameras and uses what it calls "ReactiveAI Obstacle Avoidance" to identify and avoid obstacles that it encounters on the floor, so it goes around toys, shoes and the inevitable puppy accident, rather than plowing through it and turning a small mess into a big disaster.

It has a maximum suction of 2,500 Pa and uses lidar for accurate, optimized navigation and automatic room recognition. It's app and voice controllable, and the S6 MaxV can be programmed with up to 10 no-go zones, 10 no-mop zones and 10 invisible barriers on each level of your home.

Verizon

When: Sept. 5-6

The Verizon Care Smart Watch is a smartwatch version of the Jitterbug cell phone -- it's designed expressly for seniors. It features safety features like location sharing, one-button emergency dialing to preprogrammed contacts, and health and activity reporting. In addition, it does usual smartphone stuff like reminders and step tracking.

Jackbox Games

When: Sept. 4-8

I make no secret of my adoration of Jackbox games like You Don't Know Jack, Quiplash and Drawful. They're hilarious party games that everyone plays using their own phone as a combination remote control/buzzer while crowded around the TV. For Labor Day, everything on the site is marked down with some prices up to 50% off.

Here are some of the highlights:

Lenovo Launches Fedora-Powered X1 Carbon With Linux In The Spotlight - Forbes

lenovo.indah.link

Lenovo began teasing its new Linux initiative several months ago (refresh your memory here and here). Just in time to meet its “Summer 2020” promise, the first wave of Fedora-powered ThinkPads are now up for sale on Lenovo’s webshop. But it’s not merely this expected launch that has me excited; it’s how refreshingly visible they’re making the Linux option.

The X1 Carbon Gen 8 is the first of three Fedora-powered ThinkPads launching with Fedora this year. The ThinkPad P1 Gen2 and ThinkPad P53 (which I’m currently reviewing) will complete the lineup.

While the X1 Carbon is positioned as a business laptop, it’s a consumer-facing one which means that sales of the Fedora-powered ThinkPad aren’t restricted to corporations.

Lenovo recently took their Linux love one step further, pledging to certify its entire workstation lineup — that means every ThinkStation desktop and every ThinkPad P Series laptop — for both Ubuntu LTS and Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Beyond just hardware certification, both Linux distributions will be offered as OS options during checkout.

Recommended For You

But let’s circle back to what has me so enthused. When you land on Lenovo’s X1 Carbon page, your eye will naturally fall to the left-most option, which is the “ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 8 with Linux.” The fact that option is there at all feels refreshing, and I love the visibility Lenovo is giving this system out of the gate.

I can’t help but compare this with Dell’s “Project Sputnik” offerings such as the XPS 13 Developer Edition, which continue to be somewhat elusive unless you purposefully visit the company’s dedicated Linux page.

With Lenovo’s presentation, anyone shopping for the newest ThinkPad X1 Carbon will be presented with a Linux option. And they’ll also see the obvious price difference, with the Fedora-powered option starting at $1287, well below the entry-level Windows 10 offering.

That’s also prominently featured:

The systems are currently on offer in the United States, with Europe and other regions worldwide to follow. Fedora developers, by the way, are entitled to a discount.

Lenovo Starts Offering Up Fedora Linux Pre-Loaded Systems From Their Web Store - Phoronix

lenovo.indah.link
HARDWARE --
As a follow up from the news earlier this summer of Lenovo planning to certify their ThinkPad and ThinkStation lines for Linux from Ubuntu and Red Hat while also offering distribution choices like Fedora, that work is proceeding with Lenovo now offering up their first system from their web store that comes pre-loaded with Fedora.

The ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 8 is available with Fedora preloaded while still offering up options from Core i5 through Core i7 10th Gen CPUs, 8GB / 16GB of RAM, a variety of display options (including 14-inch 4K), etc.

Additional models with Fedora are expected moving forward as well as other Linux distributions.

Red Hat developers have applauded the move. Lenovo is making use of a stock Fedora Workstation installation without any vendor customizations but will be relying upon the existing Fedora/FESCo processes should any changes be needed moving forward.

Former Red Hat developer Alberto Ruiz also commented, "The other thing they're doing right is pressing the silicon vendors to support Linux upstream too. Lenovo trully is pushing the envelope here." Fwupd/LVFS lead developer Richard Hughes of Red Hat also commented, "Can confirm; worked with dozens of ODMs and ISVs on behalf of Lenovo."

Hopefully this is just the start of many good things to come for Lenovo and Linux.
