In order to keep a laptop running for as long as possible, the maintenance of the cooling system could be very worthwhile after a few years. Cleaning out the dust from the fans and renewing the heat paste can lower the temperatures, which increases the life span of a laptop.
Correspondingly, the fans and the whole cooling system should be as easily accessible as possible. Interestingly, the Ultrabook revolution of the last decade played a positive role in this. The construction of laptops that had been more complex before became simpler since then. You often only have to remove the bottom plate in order to access components such as the internal battery or the cooling system.
However, things were a little more complicated in the ThinkPad workstations of the P series. If we take, for example, the Lenovo ThinkPad P53 from 2019: you had to almost completely disassemble the whole case including the keyboard, palm rest, display unit, and magnesium roll cage in order to access the fan unit. This was a difficult task, made more complicated by the construction of the ThinkPad P53. The fans and mainboard were not accessible from the bottom, because they were screwed into the base unit.
This year's Lenovo ThinkPad P15 Gen 1 introduced a new design with a different construction. The mainboard and fans are not fixed to the base anymore but instead to the internal magnesium frame. The base unit that uses an Ultrabook build can now be removed, making the two fans much easier accessible.
In our detailed review, we noticed some changes for the worse in the P15 Gen 1 compared to the ThinkPad P53, but the easier maintainability is clearly one of the improvements.
